Luggage Weight Tips? Packing and Luggage?

I am going on a one year study abroad to Brazil next year. My program allows me 1 (44 lb) checked bag and 1 carry on. Can you give me any reccomendations on what luggage I can get? I was thinking a wheeled duffle bag, something lightweight. Also, what are some packing tips to keep everything light… ?

I would bring the minimum possible. Probably enough t-shirts, undies shirts to last two weeks (so maybe 10 whatever of each, then off to the washing machine) a couple of pairs of jeans and a nice pair of regular stuff. sneakers, one pair of shoes, sandals, pretty much all to fit easily in a normal suitcase. An extra sweater and a jacket. For the carry-on some of the basic hygiene things (small tubes only) and the odds and ends.
