If I plug in my laptop overnight but leave it turned off will it recharge the battery?

I know this sounds like a dumb question but are laptops like cell phones, i.e., can you plug it in overnight to recharge it and then use it the next day without having to carry the cord around to plug it in?

Yes it will charge anytime that your laptop is plugged in to the power. This includes when the laptop is turned off.

There may also be little lights on your laptop to indicate whether it is plugged into the power and if the battery is full.
