I have a new suitcase that has a “fancy” lock on it. Can I lock my luggage?
I will be flying inside the US in May and possibly out of the country in October. Of course I would like to lock my luggage, but don’t want to run into any trouble or delays.
Most newly manufactured bags come with a TSA approved lock. They do have a set of master keys that match just about every lock. BUT usually they aren’t going to take the time to find the master key anymore. If your lock isnt TSA approved then they will just cut the lock if it is a city with the machines behind the scene. In most cities where the machines are out on the floor, they will either ask you to wait for your bag to be screened and sent back to the belt of ask you to leave your bag unlocked and then they will lock it after it is processed, which usually doesnt happen and the lock falls up in transit anyway.
If you want to lock your bags, go ahead. There should be something somewhere on the lock or the paperwork that came with the bag that states if it is a TSA lock or not. If not you can always go to a luggage store in the mall or sometimes Wal-Mart and Target have them, and pick one up.
