LAX international flight?

First of all I had never flown on an airplane or been to an airport so I kinda green about all of this. I have a connecting international flight and I need to know if I have to pick up my checked luggage and recheck it for my international flight or does the airport does this . I have a incoming flight with NWA and the connecting flight is Quantas(Sydney). Also I learned that there is two different terminals for Quantas so can somebody also tell me which one is for Sydney flights. Also how much time should I allow for between flights?

Your Northwest flight will arrive at LAX in Terminal 2. You will have to pick up your luggage at baggage handling and transfer to the International Terminal (between Terminal 3 and 4) for the international flight on Qantas to Sydney.

Qantas shares terminal space with British Airways, so look for the BA signs. (The terminal space Qantas shares with American Airlines is for domestic flights, not international ones).

You will not be able to check-in for the international flight until you arrive at LAX. Allow at least 2 hours prior to departure for the international check-in and another hour, minimum, to retrieve your luggage and get to the International Terminal — a total of 3 to 4 hours prior to flight departure.
